Hospital Cafeteria Renamed ‘Sylvia’s Café’ For Beloved Former Worker

There wasn’t a dry eye Friday as the South Shore Regional Hospital’s cafeteria was renamed and dedicated to one of its own.

Sylvia Mailman worked at the cafeteria for 43 years until her tragic death in a car accident in 2016.

She was remembered fondly at the ceremony for her kindness, positive attitude, and the pride she took in her work.

After her passing, donations came pouring in, prompting staff and the health services foundation to do something in her memory.

Michelle Roberts-Cheverie, Manager of Nutrition and Food Services for the South Shore, says renaming the cafeteria for her was the right fit.

Sylvia’s family and friends packed into that cafeteria to watch it be dedicated to her as “Sylvia’s Cafe.”

“She took pride in creating an inviting atmosphere and loved to hear the compliments from the customers,” said Roberts-Cheverie at the ceremony.

Sylvia’s son, Mervin Mailman, was impressed with the crowds who attended and all the stories he heard about his mother.

“It just goes to show, the crowd that was here today, even just for this, she touched a lot of lives when she worked here and she enjoyed what she was doing.

Mervin says his whole family is proud.

“It’s a proud moment for us, for her being our mother an her being honoured like this.”

The cafeteria now has new signage and a dedication plaque in her name.
