First Monarch Butterflies Arrive On South Shore

The king of the butterflies has arrived in Nova Scotia after it’s annual 5,200 kilometre flight from it’s tropical home.

The Monarch butterfly spends most of of its time in Mexico.

Carter Feltham, Butterfly Coordinator at the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute says they travel here to lay eggs.

But she says they don’t stick around very long.

“A few weeks,” she says. “Once the new Monarchs are all hatched out and fuelled up they’ll start their trip back to Mexico.”

Feltham says you can help the popular butterflies by planting wild flowers in unused parts of your lawn.

She adds if you’re hoping to catch a a glimpse of one, planting milkweed nearby will increase your chances.
