Christmas Tree Farmers Expect Banner Year

Last year’s long winter has helped boost Nova Scotia’s Christmas tree production.

A late spring meant, little to no bug infestations.

Lunenburg Christmas Tree Growers Association President, Michael Keddy said, “it was the perfect storm for exporting.”

“Puerto Rico is one of the countries that imports a lot of balsam. The retailers always comment when the door opens on the containers and a waft of scent comes over them, they say, that’s the smell of money.”

Christmas trees are a 50-million dollar industry in the province, and yet, Keddy says they’re still losing money.

“The strength of the American dollar can make a break a year for the farmers.”

But Keddy said they’ve got their eye on other markets outside of the United States, they hope to expand into like South America and China.
