Barrington To Host Great Canadian Lumberjack Celebration Next Weekend

Lumberjack culture will highlight events in Barrington next weekend.

The Great Canadian Lumberjack Celebration is a Canada 150 event being hosted by the Municipality.

Years ago, Shelburne County was a hub of the Nova Scotia logging industry.

This led to the creation of the Beaverdam Sports Meet.

One of the organizers, Suzy Atwood says that sports meet will be re-created during the festival.

“Years ago, that competition would have brought 20,000 people into Shelburne County. We’re going to try and re-create a bit of that on the Barrington River. It’s a fun competition, we’ll supply all the tools needed.”

The competition will feature canoe races, sawing, logrolling, axe throwing and more.

This will take place at the Wild Axe Park in Barrington on Saturday starting at 9am, with a junior competition the following day at 10am.

Following the adult sports meet, an assembly of team members from 1967’s Canada Centennial canoe pageant will take place at the Barrington Municipal multipurpose room.

Atwood says Barrington’s Phil Scott made the World Championships because of that 104 day run.

Atwood says with Scott and local world champion Darren Hudson, the sport has really taken off in Shelburne County.

“It’s kind of all coming full circle with this celebration, and the importance of the lumberjack to not only Barrington, but to Canada as well.”

Other events include a screening of the film ‘The Last Log Drive’ will take place Friday night at the Barrington Municipal multipurpose room and the Scott Family Timber Show on Sunday from 2-5 at the Wild Axe Park.
