Preliminary Inquiry Scheduled For Suspended Police Chief

A preliminary inquiry has been scheduled for suspended Bridgewater Police Chief John Collyer.

The 53 year-old has chosen to have the inquiry by Supreme Court judge alone.

A day and a half has been set aside on April 9 and 10, 2018 in Bridgewater Provincial Court.

Collyer has been charged with sexual assault and two charges of sexual exploitation in relation to a 17 year-old girl, whose identity is under a publication ban.

The alleged offences are believed to have occurred between April 1 and July 31 last year.

Crown Prosecutor Diane McGrath explains why she chose to proceed by indictment, a more serious charge.

“Both the seriousness of the charges and given the fact that the time frame involved is more than six months prior to the laying of the charges than we proceed with indictment.”

Defence lawyer Geoff Franklin, who was there on behalf of lawyer David Bright, says Collyer is expected to enter a plea following the preliminary inquiry.
