More stop and go traffic for the town of Shelburne.
A new stop sign has been installed where Hammond street intersects with John.
Mayor Karen Mattatall says they want to create a pattern of alternating stops to reduce people speeding along the street.
“What we had hoped to do is create what they call the basket weave, where you’ve got two blocks of the stops signs one way and two the other. It is a traffic calming measure.”
Mattatall says the town isn’t trying to inconvenience anyone, they just want to make the streets safer.
“There is an entrance to the playground part way up that hill. Some of the vehicles travelling up John Street travel quite quickly and there may be people that just aren’t aware that there could be children crossing the road there.”
Mattatall says the town will be working on a traffic policy in the fall.
And she is hoping better traffic calming measures will come out of that process.
