A new regulating body for paramedics is being established by the province.
The College of Paramedics will be responsible for standards of practice and dealing with complaints.
John Bignell is a paramedic who has spent many years in the South Shore.
He says until now those decision have been out of their hands.
“The system currently runs under a physician,” he says, “and really what we want to do is to flip that around and say ‘you know what? As paramedics we can be a body of professionals.’”
The first two years of the college will be funded by a $350,000 subsidy provided by the province.
After that it will need to be maintained through dues paid by paramedics.
