Picton Castle Offering Young People Free Trip On The High Seas

Aspiring sailors in Lunenburg County will have to act quickly to grab the opportunity of a lifetime.

Picton Castle is offering a handful of full scholarships for young people to hop on board and be part of the Rendez-Vous 2017 Regatta.

The experience would normally cost thousands of dollars.

Chief Operating Officer Maggie Ostler says there’s lots to learn on board.

“It can be a pretty powerful experience. Certainly people learn traditional seamanship skills, but maybe even the bigger lesson that comes away from it is learning more about yourself and testing your limits and challenging yourself.”

Ostler says it will definitely be a working holiday.

“They’ll participate in all aspects of sailing the ship. They’ll stand watches, they’ll steer, they’ll do lookout, they’ll handle lines, they’ll handle sails, they’ll help with ship’s maintenance, they’ll scrub the decks, all that kind of stuff.”

Applicants must be at least 15 and hold a valid passport.

They’ll depart with Picton Castle from Lunenburg this weekend.

Sailors will travel around Nova Scotia, to Newfoundland and Maine, before they return on August 27.

To apply, contact Maggie Ostler by e-mail at: info@picton-castle.com or call 902-634-9984.
