NS Health Minister Says Government Trying To Reduce Frequency Of Emergency Room Closures

It’s getting to be an almost regular occurrence.

Another closure of Shelburne’s Roseway Hospital emergency department.

It will close at 6pm Friday September 1 and reopen 8am Saturday September 2.

We asked Nova Scotia’s Health Minister why these closures are happening so frequently.

Randy Delorey says he’s been hearing about challenges in healthcare delivery across the province.

“Certainly ER closures, particularly in community hospital settings has been identified. The reasons vary in some circumstances. In some cases it’s predominantly staffing, Whether that’s physician or nurses in some instances, and their availability We are working to improve primary care accessing in our province and in particular that issue is acute in our rural communities. We are working actively to bring more primary care providers, that includes physicians and nurses to our communities.”

Delorey says the closures are more acute during the summer months.

He says it’s a challenge faced by every province, not just Nova Scotia.
