A new donation drop-off centre to support refugees will open Saturday in Halifax.
It’s is the latest step as the Nova Scotia government prepares to welcome families from Syria.
The province has committed to resettle 1,500 refugees.
Executive Director with the Office of Immigration, Suzanne Ley, says 108 groups are privately-sponsoring refugees.
“And they are truly from one end of the province to another. They are in varying stages of sponsorship; some are fundraising, some are waiting for folks to come.”
Fifteen of the groups are located in Lunenburg, Queens and Shelburne counties.
Items that are most-needed include winter clothing and school supplies.
People can also offer donations by calling 211.
Donors who call 211 in the Halifax area will receive a voice mail or email directing them to drop off their donations, if they are required, at the drop-off centre.
The centre will open at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, in Bayers Lake Business Park at the former RONA store, 350 Horseshoe Lake Drive.
For donors outside Halifax, their offers have been shared with refugee-response groups in their area and, if required, they will be contacted by those groups.
