Good news for the decimated bat population in Nova Scotia.
A colony of some 350 healthy mama bats and their young have been found in the southwest part of the province.
Mark Elderkin, the Endangered Species Biologist at the Department of Natural Resources says that’s especially encouraging for industries that rely on bats for insect control.
“The value of ecological services that bats provide is somewhere from three to twenty-four billion dollars annually.”
Elderkin says so far they’re not sure why these bats have been unaffected by White Nose Syndrome which destroyed 95% of the population in Nova Scotia.
He says they’ll continue to monitor the colony over the coming months.
