Nova Scotia’s premier is thanking the countless volunteers, emergency officials, DNR staff and out of province crews for their help fighting fires.
Stephen McNeil was on scene yesterday at the fire in Seven Mile Lake.
He says he was impressed by the collaboration and effort by everyone involved.
“There are people who have working for the better part of a week in an unfamiliar part of the province, in very tough terrain, sleeping on mats and cots and getting up the next day to go haul hose through the woods to try and dampen this fire.”
The premier says he is concerned with the amount of fires ongoing in Nova Scotia.
McNeil is hopeful Mother Nature will chime-in soon to give firefighters a reprieve from their efforts.
Also, the minister of Natural Resources reached out to thank everyone involved.
Lloyd Hiens says the wildfire at Seven Mile Lake is at a critical point.
He says it is nearing 400 hectares and is burning through resources at a significant rate.
Hines says no cause of the fire is known at this time.
“In Nova Scotia, over 90 percent of them are caused by humans. We’re not, at this point, stopping to start sifting through the ashes to find out what the cause was.”
He says a DNR investigation involving the Fire Marshal’s office and RCMP will be held to determine the cause.
The wildfires cost approximately $200,000 a day.
A final tally will be released once all fires are out.
