VIDEO:Gaff Point Gets The Google Treatment

State of the art technology is meeting untouched wilderness.

A group of hikers from the Nature Conservancy of Canada walked the Gaff Point trail with a Google Trekker.

Stewardship Coordinator Doug van Hemessen carried the 50 pound, 15 camera back pack for part of the hike.

“This is a brand new thing for me,” he says, “and it’s really interesting technology. It’s like having R2D2 on your back.”

The rig has 15 cameras that take a picture every 2.5 seconds giving a 360 degree view of the picturesque 7 km path.

Stewardship Coordinator Doug van Hemessen says it’s an exciting project.

“It makes sense to do the two parts, where we maintain the property but also keep the trail there and keep that access going and now extend that into this technological world”

This trail is the second in the province to be recorded for Google street view this week.

Google will take the pictures captured today and stitch them together.

The images will be available on Google Street View and the Nature Conservancy website early next year.
