Region Of Queens Tackles Aging Sewer Lines

The Region of Queens Municipality is continuing to work on its sewers this summer.

Like many coastal areas, Liverpool and its surrounding communities have aging infrastructure.

Since amalgamation, the municipality has been working to attach parts of Brooklyn to the sewer system and municipal water.

Mayor David Dagley says this year’s addition will stop at least 22 homes from sending sewage directly into the harbour through straight pipes.

“Residents that are located within 100 feet of the sanitary sewer line, will be required to hook into the sewer.”

Dagley says those who have proper working wells are exempt from connecting them but he expects many will regardless.

The street saw extensive work last year that remedied a long standing issue.

The houses were built by the former Bowater Paper Mill and had previously been connected to water at the mill site.

Pipes are in place now and set to connect to the sewer line.

A pumping station will be built near the waterfront park and several homes on Shore Road will also be connected to the system.

The project starts on Shore Road at Markland Avenue June 4 and will extend to the waterfront park.

Construction zones will be closed to traffic.

This isn’t the only work being done to Queens’ water infrastructure this year.

Work has already begun on Union Street in Liverpool to pull up sewer and water supply pipes that were originally put in during the Victorian period.

The municipality has been steadily replacing these pipes for over 30 years.

“The priority if the Region of Queens is to look at the replacement of those old pipes in the places that are giving us the most problems,” says Dagley.

The construction is being done as a part of the municipality’s five year capital plan.

Dagley says their plans can change to accomodate any emergency work or extensions on projects that may need to take place.
