Abortion Pill To Be Available Free At Pharmacies: N.S. Government

Women in Nova Scotia now have more affordable access to the abortion pill.

Government announced it will be picking up the tab on Mifegymiso, a drug combination taken to medically terminate an early pregnancy of up to 49 days.

Pharmacies across the province will provide the pills to women with a valid health card and prescription.

An ultrasound is also required to rule out potential health risks.

Minister responsible for the Status of Women, Kelly Regan, says the move will cost government between $175,000 and $200,000 a year.

“We’re supporting more choice for women when it comes to their reproductive health and this will ensure all Nova Scotia women have access to this option.”

Women can also now opt for a surgical abortion without a referral from a family doctor.

A phone line will be set up by the Nova Scotia Health Authority where women across the province can call for appointments and to seek advice.

The new protocols are expected to be in place within the next few months.
