Loaded Handgun in Public ‘Inexcusable’ says Bridgewater Mayor

Bridgewater’s Mayor is standing by the phrase “safety first,” especially concerning residents and taxpayers.

Last weekend, a local man was arrested at the South Shore Exhibition while in possession of a loaded .22-Calibre handgun and a concealed knife; an incident that Mayor David Mitchell says is inexcusable and something that will not be tolerated.

“Disturbing, troubling, concerning, there’s a whole bunch of words I could use,” says Mitchell. “A loaded handgun in a crowded place, it always seems to be a bigger city issue, so it’s a bit of a shock when this happens, I mean this could have ended differently.”

Mitchell feels the quick response of Bridgewater Police certainly helped de-escalate a potentially bad situation, and he has nothing but positive re-enforcement for the local police service.

“To have a Municipal Police Force that steps up and steps in without hesitation, we’re very grateful to the men and women of our police force for doing their job each and very day,” adds Mitchell.

Mitchell says once the police investigation has been completed, he plans to sit down with members of the South Shore Exhibition Board to find recommendations on maintaining public safety in future.
