The South Shore got a bigger helping of winter than they expected.
Environment Canada was originally forecasting mostly freezing rain for Saturday.
However, by noon snow was falling in much of the region.
Up to 25 cm fell in some areas with winds gusting up to 80 km per hour.
Snow on top of a layer of ice made for messy road conditions.
The Department of Transportation started brining the highways before 10 a.m., but the RCMP says several cars went off the road yesterday.
Despite the heavy snow, Nova Scotia Power reported no major outages in the South Shore.
The next few days should give us a bit of a break with a mostly dry and cold forecast into the week.
