Bridgewater’s dog population is seeing a spike in kennel cough.
Melanie Colwell, veterinarian at South Shore Veterinarian Hospital, says she’s seen about six cases of what she believes is the common illness.
She says it’s not confirmed but the animals she has seen have the hallmark symptoms.
“That’s definitely increased amount for sure, the other thing I will say though is it’s not unusual once or twice a year to have a bit of an increased level of kennel cough showing up.”
It generally goes away on its own within two to three weeks.
However, Colwell says some owners may want to get a cough supressant for their pet.
“The main symptom that we see are a very loud persistant cough, it can sound like a wet cough, it can sound like a goose honk cough.”
There is a vaccine available that can prevent some of the strains or keep it from becoming too serious.
Most dogs recover just fine, but Colwell says some that are immunocompromised may get pneumonia.
She says it’s important to remember kennel cough is highly contagious.
And the best thing to do if your dog is sick, is keep it away from places like the local dog park or doggy daycare until the illness has passed in two to three weeks.
Cats can also show symptoms if they come into contact with canines.
The Town of Bridgewater has also put out an advisory asking people who suspect their dog of being ill, not to attend the dog park or other places pets frequently gather.
