A $1 million cheque was presented to the Municipality of Lunenburg yesterday.
The investment came from the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia to help clean up the LaHave River.
Executive director Angel Bishop says it’s a cause that’s important to the community.
“One of the really unique things about community funding is the decisions are made by people in local communities leveraging local philanthropy.”
Bishop says cleaning up the LaHave isn’t just about environmental impact, but also economic development.
She says the goal is to use the river to help draw more people to move and do business in the area.
Meanwhile, Don Downe, Mayor for the Municipality of Lunenburg says he’s blown away by the generosity.

“What a great gift. I’ve never seen, in all my years of public life, a private entity donate a million dollars to a municipality because they’re doing the right thing.”
Downe says it took decades to damage the river and it won’t be fixed over night.
But, he says this is another step in the right direction.
