First Winter Storm Catches Drivers Off Guard

The area’s first winter storm cancelled schools, caused havoc with commuters and kept first responders busy this morning.

Sergeant Mark MacPherson with Lunenburg RCMP says by 9:00am his members had responded to 20 accidents.

MacPherson says people need to adjust their speed for the conditions and not be aggressive when coming up behind other drivers.

“A day like today, if that person catches the shoulder, hits a bad patch, applies their brakes and you overreact, there’s going to be a collision.”

MacPherson says the sudden snow shows the need for people to be prepared for winter conditions.

That includes clearing snow from vehicles, and installing winter tires.

But most importantly, driving for the conditions.

“People just need to take their time, slow down, respect each other on the road and you’ll get there safely.”

MacPherson stresses that during a storm, it’s best for everyone if those who don’t have to be on the roads would stay home.
