Lunenburg Will Have To Wait To Light The Vessels

Winter weather is causing some Christmas celebrations to be delayed.

Lunenburg’s annual Lighting of the Vessels which was scheduled for Friday night has been postponed until next Saturday, December 1.

The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic’s Penny Zwicker says organizers were concerned about frigid temperatures and high winds.

“A little bit of snow is pleasant, a little bit chilly is just fine. However, the wind creates some safety issues.”

Zwicker says they couldn’t provide proper shelter for their food vendors and of course, they have to be careful when setting off fireworks.

The annual event started with just a few museum employees stringing lights on ships and carolling.

Zwicker estimates that last year, close to 3,000 people took in the lighting of the vessels.
