National Poppy Campaign Begins

People have started showing their respect to men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The poppy campaign opened today and goes until Remembrance Day.

Senior Program Officer at Dominion Command, Bill Maxwell, says the poppy is the symbol of remembrance in Canada.

“In memory of the 117,000 Canadians that gave their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms we have today.”

Poppies are available through more than 1,400 Royal Canadian Legion branches along with local businesses.

The money raised from poppy donations helps Canada’s veterans through financial assistance and numerous support services.

Poppies are not sold but legions accept donations.

Over 21-million poppies were distributed last year.

Maxwell says there is a certain way to wear a poppy.

“The important thing is basically that Canadians are wearing the poppy. But, appropriately it should be worn on your chest just around your heart on the left side.”

Maxwell says the poppy should be worn starting today until the end of day on November 11.

However, he adds it’s acceptable for people to place their poppy at the base of the cenotaph following a Remembrance Day ceremony.
