With a new year in full swing, now is the time to create a better you.
Kerry Copeland is a Health Promotions Specialist with Doctors Nova Scotia.
She encourages people to choose an active and healthy lifestyle with the holidays in the rear view mirror.
Some helpful tips include making yourself earn treats by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and planning your healthy behaviour.
“If you want to try and get some physical activity into your day, probably best to do it first thing in the day if you can. Put it in your schedule because you’re more likely to follow through with it.”
The Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a week.
Copeland says people should take baby steps to start and work to improve their eating and exercise threshold on a daily basis.
She says some realistic goals could be to walk one to two times a week and eat one piece of fruit or vegetable every day.
Nova Scotia has one of the highest rates of chronic disease and disability in Canada.
Copeland says those issues can be avoided by making healthier decisions.
