Grants Help Keep Firefighters Safe

Fire departments across Nova Scotia have a million reasons to smile.

That’s because the provincial government recently announced almost a million dollars for equipment to help keep first responders safe.

The money, $957,644, will be given to 77 departments province-wide including more than a dozen in the South Shore.

The Lunenburg and District Fire Department will receive $20,000.

Chief Darren Romkey says it will help them replace all their radios.

“Most of them are almost 20 years old. We have replaced a few of them over the last few years with digital. We’re looking to go all digital and also our pagers for all firefighters are starting to go on the blink and it’s hard to find parts for them.”

The total cost is $60,000.

Money will also be provided by the Town of Lunenburg and District 1 and 2 fire commission.

Romkey says the personal radios are used during fire calls.

“But, we can also talk to other departments as well when we go to mutual aid calls especially when a lot of departments have already upgraded to digital, it makes it easier to communicate on fire scenes.”

A list of departments receiving help from the Emergency Services Provider Fund is below.
