Folk Harbour Society Acquires Lunenburg Opera House

A Lunenburg landmark is changing hands.

Businessman Farley Blackman and his wife, Courtney, have sold the Lunenburg Opera House to the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society.

The Blackman’s offered the property to the Society, who through a generous gift from the Fordi Family Foundation were able to complete the purchase.

In a release, Farley Blackman says his goal was to restore and protect the Opera House and see it operated as an arts venue.

Blackman adds they will not recover far more than $1-million put in after tax dollars, which they will consider as their contribution to the vibrancy of Lunenburg.

Blackman’s multi-million dollar restoration of the Opera House included a new roof, stage, walls, seating, sound and lighting systems and is now fully-insulated and able to operate year-round.

The Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society’s Board of Directors outlined in their strategic plan a desire to own and administer a premier performance space in the town.

Bob Fordi of the Fordi Family Foundation says “they are pleased to have played a part in bringing the Society’s vision to life.”
