SRHS Students To Protest Clearcutting

A group of students wants to raise awareness about the clear cutting of forests in our region.

A class at Shelburne Regional High School will take to the streets Friday for a brief walkout.

Student Evan Harris says clear cuts are planned for Shelburne County.

“They’re planning two, one in Clyde River and one in Allendale and there’s supposed to be 49. We want to try to get it to stop, so we thought this would raise awareness for it.”

He says they’ll leave the school just after lunch on Friday.

“So, like 1:20. We’re planning to walk down to the community centre, stay there for about 20 minutes, and then come back around 2:30.”

Harris says the school is aware of the event and students have contacted other groups to join them to send a message to the province.

More than a thousand people signed a petition calling for moratorium on clear cutting in Shelburne County.
