Chester Castaways Bring Junior ‘C’ Hockey Back to Lunenburg County

Junior ‘C’ hockey is returning to Chester.

The Nova Scotia Regional Junior Hockey League approved the Chester Castaways as the newest expansion team, joining existing franchises in Spyfield, East Hants, Eastern Shore, Windsor, Cumberland and Sackville.

The team is currently recruiting players between the ages of 16 and 20 for tryouts in September.

President and General Manager, Mike LaPierre, says he’s excited about the opportunity.

“There is always a lot of fans at the rink and they really back up their teams there,” says LaPierre, who is fresh off a head coaching stint with the Windsor Royals for the past two seasons.

“Myself and my partner, Craig Sanford, we discussed starting up a Junior ‘C’ team (in Chester) and after reaching out to the rink manager, Tommy Graves, we thought it would be a great fit.”

LaPierre expects their home games will be played Friday nights at the Eleanor Pew Morris Memorial Arena.

Chester previously had a Junior ‘C’ hockey team from 2008 to 2013 known as the Clippers.

They won back-to-back provincial championships in 2012 and 2013 before relocating to Sydney.

They were renamed the Northside Vics and folded after one season.

You can listen to the full interview with Mike LaPierre on the May 5th edition of South Shore Sunday Morning from 8-9 a.m. on Country 100.7 and 9-10 a.m. on CKBW.
