A long-awaited addition to South Shore Regional Hospital is now up and running.
The first procedure was performed in the Minimally Invasive Surgical suite yesterday.
While the actual construction of the MIS suite took only four months, the planning began three years ago.
Arleen Stevens, Executive Director of the Health Services Foundation says funding from the community was helped along by a large donation.
“The Sander family gave us a call. After several months of conversation, they decided the MIS suite was where they wanted to make their one million dollar impact on this community.”
BC real estate mogul Steven Sander lived in Bridgewater when he arrived in Canada in the 1960s and never forgot the kindness he was shown.
Stevens says the addition of the MIS suite could make a difference when attracting doctors.
“Medical students who are trained would learn on an MIS suite. So when we talk to surgeons about recruitment, our hope has always been that this would help with the recruitment phase.”
Stevens says the new suite will be named the Hollyburn Properties & Sander Family MIS Suite.
