He was considered a permanent fixture on the corner of King & Lincoln Street as a cab driver in Lunenburg.
Fred Romkey passed away Thursday at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital at 91.
Romkey’s Taxi would service the community from 1956 until he decided to retire in 2017.
Speaking to CKBW/Country 100.7 in 2017, Romkey said he still planned to be behind the wheel.
“I will still drive myself around, I still got my car to drive around and go see friends and stuff. I have a grandson who plays hockey and I’m always going around somewheres, one place or another.”
Romkey had knack for driving a chevy, saying he’s driven about 45 Impalas in his lifetime.
In his obituary, it notes that Freddie was a man who truly put his entire heart into whatever he did.
Besides being a family man, Romkey was also known as an avid gardener and hockey coach.
He also had a taste of life at sea.
“I made one trip scalloping and I made one trip dory fishing and I made one groundfishing. I just made those trips so I knew what the fishermen was going through.”
The funeral service will be held Wednesday May 15 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church in Lunenburg.
