Local Residents, MP React To News Of Trump Presidency

A Trump presidency won’t just affect Americans in the U.S.

John Wimberly is an American living in Canada.

He says the signs were obvious Americans were frustrated with the status quo.

“People were upset with politics as usual. That came out in the primaries on both the democratic and republican front. The difference was that the Republican front came out just strong enough that they weren’t able to stop it.”

Wimberly says Canadians should now take a good look at themselves.

“The difference that Canadians should feel should not be one of smugness. We should feel really lucky that we are not so tired and poor and hungry that we turn to someone like Donald Trump.”

Wimberly believes if Bernie Sanders was the nominee, not Hillary Clinton, that Americans would be waking up to him as the new president.

He says he is concerned about the next four years.

Meanwhile, people enjoying their morning coffee in Bridgewater reacted to news that Donald Trump would be the next President of the United States.

Phillip from Bridgewater says “He’s shocked. Just because I didn’t really think he could pull it off.”

Kathy of Bridgewater says “I’m concerned about everybody. I don’t know it’s just crazy. I guess anybody can be President these days.”

Beulah, also of Bridgewater adds “I don’t see nothing wrong with it. I’m not for Hillary or him but I say give him a chance and see what happens.”

Virgil of Lunenburg says “In a way, I’m a little bit amazed that it did happen. You have a businessman in there compared to one that’s been a politician basically all her life. I’m looking forward to seeing what really happens now.”

The member of parliament for South Shore – St. Margaret’s, Bernadette Jordan says the american election has had some unintended benefits.

“I think one of the things that I really noticed was the amount of youth engagement that I found quite interesting. They had a lot of comments and a lot of questions and to see young people being engaged, I think, has been a thing to watch and unfold.”

She says Canada and the US have always had a close relationship and she’s sure that will continue.
