David Devenne Sworn-In As Mahone Bay Mayor

The torch has been passed in Mahone Bay.

David Devenne has been sworn-in as the town’s new mayor.

He believes the new council has an opportunity to engage more with the public.

“If we’re going to have a local municipal government that the people will rely on and the people will have faith in, the people have to be seen to having a

Devenne says that could include using more social media, town hall sessions and open office hours to speak with the public.

He says one of the first new movements was to introduce a new policy that will see councillor expenses made public.

“Their expense accounts will be posted on our website and we’ll be encouraging that transparency with the citizens so they can see what the council is doing.”

Karl Nauss will serve as Mahone Bay’s deputy mayor.

Meanwhile, the former mayor of Mahone Bay, Joe Feeney says it will be good to spend more time at home.

He says it’s no coincidence his son, also named Joe, waited until now to run for a position on council.

“It was of the opinion that as long as I was there, he was going to steer clear. I think one person in the family at a time is more than enough.”

Simone Chia-Kangata and Richard Nowe joined the younger Feeney Tuesday night to be sworn-in as new councillors.

The now former mayor has already accepted a number of volunteer positions and says he will continue to find other ways to serve the community.
