Its mission was to break up a growing ice-jam in the lower reaches of the LaHave River.
However, the crew of the Coast Guard ice-breaker Sir William Alexander has been forced to abandon today’s operation.
Stephen Bornais of the Coast Guard says the LaHave is too shallow to handle such a large vessel.
He tells us: “The Sir William Alexander arrived at the mouth of the river (this morning) and sent its barge ahead to depth sound the water and it was discovered there was no enough water level to allow the vessel to enter the river to begin ice breaking.”
The operation was intended to prevent an ice buildup and flooding in the upper LaHave River area once the spring runoff goes into high gear.
There are no plans to bring in another ice breaker.
