And It’s Stinkin’ To High Heaven

Is it just me, or are there a lot of skunks around this year?

Most animals seem to go in cycles. Some years you have more, some years you have less. Coyotes and rabbits tend to work on this opposite each other. One year you start seeing a lot of rabbits. Before too long, the coyotes start to move in to feast on rabbits. Then the number of rabbits goes down and the number of coyotes starts to dwindle.

Or they fact that last year we had a lot of acorns. This year we ended up with a ton of excess chipmunks, all because food was easy to come by last year.

Everything seems to go in cycles, so it doesn’t surprise me when this sort of thing happens. Well… it doesn’t surprise me often. Skunks surprise me… only because when they are laying in the middle of the road, you don’t see them as much as smell them. And it’s kind of like getting a 2 X 4 to the nose.

Not too many years ago, we didn’t see many skunks around this part of the province. We had porcupines to line or highways, while other areas had skunks. Or at least it seemed that way. Which was just fine by me.

But I guess the skunks thought our nasal passages were in need of a good assault, so they moved in. And for some reason, I seem to be seeing, or smelling, quite a few lately.

Although nature does adapt, and I swear I saw a crow with a clothespin on it’s nose hoping along the edge of the 103 the other day.

Maybe it’s my imagination, but there seems to be a few more of them around this year. Sure, the smell lingers for a few seconds, but the worst part is I can’t get that old song out of my head.
