DNR: Bobcat Sightings Common Despite Timid Behaviour

A wildlife biologist with the Department of Natural Resources says there is a healthy population of bobcats in Nova Scotia.

A Facebook post at ‘We Love Nova Scotia’ shows a trail camera photo of a large bobcat in a wooded area of Parkdale in Lunenburg County.

Mike Boudreau says the animals are quite secretive and it’s unusual for people to see them.

He adds, people shouldn’t try to aggravate them.

“You definitely wouldn’t want to corner one. They will normally run off when they feel they are being encroached upon.”

Boudreau says the animals are active all year but would be spotted most in the spring when they’re hungry and might stumble upon someone’s property.

“For the most part, you see them running across the road in front of you or in this case in a trail camera picture. If you were standing there, they wouldn’t likely come through.”

Upwards of 70 bobcats are harvested every year in Lunenburg County.
