Province Wants To Improve Patient Record Management

Government is working to update Nova Scotia’s health information system.

Currently doctors and medical facilities are using hundreds of different kinds systems to store and share patient’s medical records.

Health Minister Leo Glavine says the province is now looking to find a vendor who can take the information from all those different systems and present it in a way all medical professionals can access.

“It’s going to ensure right information is available to the right people at the right time.”

Glavine says many of the systems being used are outdated.

“The IWK system for one is really only slightly above the Palm Pilot era. And so, a major overhaul is going to be part of the new system.”

Glavine says this is the first step to modernizing how the province handles patient’s records and it will be several years before the One Person One Record project will be up and running.
