Queens: Library Move To Former Courthouse Would Cost Over $2-Million

A feasibility study estimates a $2.2-million price tag to move the Thomas Raddall library to the former Queens County courthouse in Liverpool.

Architecture 49 was hired by the Region of Queens Municipality to conduct the study.

The courthouse has been vacant since 2015.

Mayor David Dagley says the report is to let councillors and the public know about the cost.

“We’re recognizing that tax increases are not favorable and certainly expenditures that favour the best interests of the taxpayer will be high on our agenda.”

The study also suggests the library needs 3,500 square feet of space – the courthouse has 2,200 and means construction would also be needed.

The report also lists four other options for the courthouse including selling it at fair market value, leasing it to an organization or identify an alternate use.

The library is currently under lease at the Rossignol Cultural Centre until May 31, 2017 at a cost of just over $51,000 annually.

Dagley expects council to make a decision on the matter early in 2017.
