Emergencies can be stressful, especially if English isn’t your first language.
Lunenburg County RCMP met with other first responders to work on a strategy to help new refugee families settling in the area.
Constable Zaiuddin Hamidi says some refugees may have a negative perception of police.
“Maybe meet them in a friendly environment, pay them a visit at their house when they’re settled in,” he says. “That would, kind of, help relieve tension and let them know they can call us.”
He adds working to respect cultural traditions can go a long way to build trust.
