It’s that time of year when homeowners should make sure their chimneys are clean.
Chimney fires are common in Lunenburg county.
Fire departments responded to 80 of them between November 2014 and April 2015.
Dayspring Fire Chief Stanley Slauenwhite says there is no rule of thumb on how often a chimney should be cleaned.
“A lot of it depends on the type of wood you’re burning, how seasoned it is, and what kind of condition your chimney and your heating appliance is in.”
However, he says it’s good habit to have your chimney cleaned every few weeks.
Chimney fires often spark from a build-up of creosote.
If you suspect you have a chimney fire, call 911 and exit your home.
