A Few Of My Favourite Squashes

I like squash. Many squash.

Except maybe zucchini. I do like small quantities of zucchini, but I don’t think there really is any such thing as a small quantity of zucchini. They seem to appear by the truckload.

But I like many squash. In particular, the green types. Acorn squash are good, but I prefer buttercup. And when you get right down to it, I really like sweet mama.

They aren’t easy to find, although you can locate them if you know what to look for. They look sort of like a buttercup, but without the cup. And they supposedly have more stripes. So a kind of stripy, cupless squash.

The thing is, they tend to be a bit drier than many of their cousins. And most of my family likes dry squash. I have mentioned before that I have tried many ways to find dry squash. Colour, bumpiness of the skin, dryness of the stem… there are a lot of ways I have been told over the years. I’m not sure any of them really work.

The thing is, picking a squash is a bit like Christmas morning. You never know what you have until you rip off the outer wrapping and get to what’s inside. Some times you get a good surprise. Some times you get the squash equivalent of socks and underwear.
