A U.S. Company Wants To Sue Canada

Digby Neck is at the center of an international lawsuit.

In 2002, Bilcon, a U.S. company, tried to establish a quarry there but an environmental assessment rejected the plan.

The company appealed to a NAFTA tribunal which ruled the assessment was unfair.

Now that decision is being appealed in a Canadian Federal Court.

If the company wins that appeal, they could seek up to $100 million in damages.

Gretchen Fitzgerald is with the Sierra Club of Canada.

They worked with the people of Digby against the quarry and have just been given intervenor status.

“You know there is something there that you intuitively think – there`s something wrong,” says Fitzgerald. “I guess I hope our courts will uphold that inuitive sense of justice.”

Fitzgerald says she hopes to see the case before the court in the next few months.
