Agencies Discuss Helping Refugees During Emergencies

First responders are assessing how to help Syrian families during an emergency situation.

A number of community agencies like the RCMP, paramedics, school board and Immigration Nova Scotia met with the regional emergency management organization.

They have identified language as a barrier.

Coordinator Heather MacKenzie-Carey says the group is determining how it can be overcome.

“First responders have a way of working though language issues, they encounter language issues all the time and sometimes you have to rely on some non-verbal communication until you can get the language straightened out.”

The 211 phone service also provides translators.

The agencies will develop their own contingency plan to help when there is an emergency.
