Mahone Bay is ready to continue discussions that may lead to amalgamation.
Mayor Joe Feeney says it’s time to assemble a committee that will help determine next steps.
Feeney says the committee will have a specific focus on shared services with questions needing answers.
“What’s going to happen to the tax rate? What’s going to happen to their services? Who is going to be responsible for everybody’s debts or are we on our own for debt servicing?”
Feeney says they’re waiting on the Town of Lunenburg to join the committee.
Meanwhile, Lunenburg appears ready to join talks about amalgamation.
When a motion was passed by Mahone Bay council, Mayor Rachel Bailey admits there may have been some misunderstanding.
Bailey says some clarity was provided at a recent meeting and now feels they’re all on the same page.
“We are not closing the door to any kind of shared service arrangement or opportunity for working in a different arrangement than we have no with our municipal neighbours.”
The mayor agrees with her municipal colleagues that more research needs to be done before any decisions are made.
The minister of municipal affairs will be visiting Mahone Bay and Lunenburg in the coming weeks.
Both mayors expect amalgamation to come up for discussion.
