Apples Anyone?

We’re into one of my favourite times of year. The time when we have a pretty much full selection of apples available.

Like most, I have my favourites. And there are a lot to choose from.

Galas are good. So are Pink Ladies, but they can be hard to find some times. I have mentioned many times my love of russets, but not just any russets. They have to be the old style russets.

Too often the russets that are pretending to be russets are really not. At least in my mind. I think someone did some cross breeding at one time and came up with something sort of russet-ie, but not quite as tooth breaking hard and not quite as tart and they were trying to pass them off as russets.

It may have been an attempt to revive the fortunes of the russet. There were times when not many people wanted a sort of furry greenish brown apple that was hard as a rock and a touch on the sour side, but I like them. You can still find them with a bit of searching.

But I think my favourite these days is probably the Honeycrisp. Last year there was a bit of a stir over the new Cosmic Crisp. I haven’t seen any yet and it may be another couple years before they start to appear around here, but I do want tp try them.

That’s one of the fun things about apples. They are always coming up with new ones. It does take a while, since there is quite a process involved, but it does make this time of year interesting for an apple lover. You can try new varieties, but there are always old favourites to return to.
