BCAF Receives $90K in Federal Funding To Address Stormwater Issues

Attempts to lessen the effects of stormwater runoff are getting some help.

MP for South Shore-St.Margaret’s Bernadette Jordan was in Lunenburg to announce $90,000 for the Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation’s Soaking Up Stormwater in Southwest Nova Scotia project.

Jordan says the funding is part of the federal government’s Eco-Action Fund which supports local actions to combat climate change.

“We know that climate change is real. We just have to look at the day to day aspects, things like, the fact that the LaHave River doesn’t freeze anymore and it always did 40 years ago. People who don’t think that it’s real, you just look at something like we’re talking about here with stormwater, and the damage it can cause.”

Clare Kellock, Project Coordinator with BCAF says the funding will allow them to do more Low Impact Development projects such as rain gardens.

“We wouldn’t be able to do as much without the Eco-Action Community Funding Program. That really helps us complete, I think it’s 15 LID projects that we’re doing next year. It makes a difference to what we would normally be able to do.”

Kellock says they’re looking to partner with municipalities and residents on future stormwater diversion projects over the next two years.
