Nova Scotia Power is warning customers about a new phone scam which targets business and commercial customers.
Spokesperson Tiffany Chase says the caller pretends to be a representative of the company and demands a cash payment at a designated location or risk having their power disconnected the same day.
“We typically would not contact customers demanding in-person bill payment. We would make arrangements for bill payments from time to time.”
Chase says customers who are suspicious about a request for payment are urged to call the company’s Customer Care Centre line (1-800-428-6230) and report any attempted fraud to law enforcement.
She says they’ve had 11 complaints in the Halifax area.
Often the scammers will try their luck in other areas as well.
