Big Bucks Predicted To Fix Bluenose II Steering

It could cost in excess of 350-thousand dollars to correct steering problems aboard Bluenose II. That estimate from Premier Stephen McNeil’s Deputy, David Darrow. He says a new hydraulic-assist system should be installed later this year. Progressive Conservative MLA Chris d’Entremont in Argyle-Barrington says a steel rudder should never have been attached to the vessel in the first place. He says: “They went on with this steel rudder, contrary to what any mariner I have talked to would suggest in the last number of months. They can’t believe they put a steel rudder on there. But, thats what they have today and they will have to try and compensate for it.” d’Entremont predicts with still dozens of other problems from the rebuild plaguing the vessel, the final bill to fix them all will be well into the 20-millions of dollars by the time Bluenose II sails again. David Darrow says that should be next spring.
