Big Tancook Island Receives Community Spirit Award from Lieutenant Governor

Residents of Big Tancook Island in Lunenburg County are known for their resourcefulness and resilience.

You can add community spirit to that list.

The island, which sits at the outer edge of Mahone Bay in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, received the Lieutenant Governor’s Community Spirit award.

A ceremony was held Wednesday in the island’s recreation centre.

Lieutenant Governor Arthur J. Leblanc presented community members with a piece of Nova Scotian crystal.

Island resident Hillary Dionne says it’s a wonderful recognition.

“Our community is comprised of amazing individuals and we always come together and volunteer and do things for the greater good of the community. It’s really nice to have been chosen.”

Dionne says the island is a unique place to live.

“It’s so very different from a lot of other mainland places. You have to plan ahead, you have to work together, you have to be self-sufficient. It’s a very wholesome lifestyle and absolutely great place to be.”

The award along with banners explaining island life and community spirit and a digital picture frame will be on display at the recreation centre.
