Birchtown: Manager Reflects On New Centre

The new Black Loyalist Heritage Centre opened in Birchtown over the weekend.

The $7-million centre provides interactive exhibits, a gift shop and helps provide a visual reminder of black loyalist history in Nova Scotia.

Site Manager Beverley Cox says the opening ends a long journey but begins a new endeavour.

She says it hasn’t been easy.

“We’ve worked hard to get here. We’ve had a few hurdles but we’ve perservered. We are a group of resilient people and it’s so wonderful to know that we’re at this point.”

The previous centre burned down in 2006.

The new facility is around 10,000 square feet.

A river of time wall is one of the new interactive features at the centre.

Cox says the wall represents the journey, starting with enslavement in Africa.

There are also 3,000 names of Black Loyalists who came to Nova Scotia, written on glass floor.

Cox says it represents people walking on the shoulders of their ancestors.
