BRIDGEWATER: First Degree Murder Case Pushed Back

A slow start in the case against a 22-year-old accused of killing his mother.

John ‘Jack’ Buckley has been returned to custody until a lawyer can be officially retained.

Pat MacEwen has been representing him so far but says the details still need to be finalized.

“There’s still some unclarity [sic] there,” he says. “More time is needed by Legal aid to make a decision. So, within the next few days we’ll have that cleared up and either myself or another lawyer will represent him on a go forward [basis].”

The judge has given the defence a month to find a solution.

MacEwen says legal aid has been contacted but until the details are worked out Buckley will have to stay put.

“Currently he’s in custody. If he wants to apply for bail he’ll have to do that in the Supreme Court and that’s entirely up to him. If there’s an appropriate plan I’m sure he’ll make that application.”

Buckley is due back in court June 8th when dates will be set for the preliminary inquiry.
