Bridgewater: Mayor ”Grateful” For Firefighter Response To King Street Blaze

The mayor of Bridgewater is grateful to firefighters for their dedication to limit the spread of fire on King Street.

Two buildings were heavily damaged after the overnight fire Sunday into Monday.

Firefighters from roughly a dozen departments from across Lunenburg County and as far as Liverpool were called to the scene.

David Mitchell says it was a job well done by all involved.

“That’s a lot for those other communities to send their men and women to Bridgewater and put them in harms way and they don’t even question it, they just come. It is cooperation at its best. I’m eternally grateful, we are as a town, to everyone who helped.”

Mitchell says he’s proud of the joint effort between fire departments, police and town staff throughout the fire and early clean-up.

Residents from two apartments and employees of at least four businesses have been displaced.

He adds it’s a reminder that the town is compact and fire can spread easily.

“It also reminds us that local businesses, even the ones that weren’t effected directly by the fire but by the street closure, this has a significant impact on them. Think of now the businesses that are closed and these buildings that are going to have to come down and the loss to them; we’re a small community and it impacts us all.”

Firefighters were back on scene last night and today dealing with hotspots.

The investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing.

The Bridgewater Police Service will remain at the scene until it is complete.
